Hey I'm Derek. I'm 26 years old. I currently live in Indianapolis, IN, but I am originally from Normal, IL. I have a full time job in the insurance industry and also write about mixed martial arts part time for a couple different web sites. In my free time I also train in Muay Thai boxing and kickboxing.

Id like for you to please select your top 5 fighters in each division starting with lightweight and then make a top ten P4P ranking. Please keep the following in mind when making your rankings.

-Quality of opponents
-Division domination

what do you think the odds are of Tito coming into the cage and calling out Kimbo tonight after they remove Shamrock on the stretcher?

After reading that Tito is close to signing with them it just seems like a WWE move waiting to happen. Tito is sitting ringside providing guest commentary, Kimbo ko's ken, then Tito steps into the cage and says Kimbo only beat Ken because Tito softened him up with his beatdowns years ago.

I could be wrong, but this is EliteXC I'm talking about here.

Are you allowed to reveal your source? And is Arlovski still going to fight for Affliction after his EliteXC debut? Those should be good fights if they're really happening, but I still want to see Fedor vs Arlovski. Mousasi should take care of Belfort, but it's good to see a DREAM fighter stateside. Thanks for the heads-up.

Wow thanks for the note man! That would definitely be huge. I wonder how Arlovski will feel, being the odd man out. I would love to see the other fight. Vitor looks to be back on track but Mousasi looks very dangerous. Its a great time to be a UFC man. I'm glad to have met someone who is well informed =)

That is hilarious that you saw Mike being interviewed! I need to track that down since I didn't see it. Did you know he actually used to be a lawyer? The guy is hilarious. Between having him and Bobby Knight as our basketball coach...well lets just say it was never boring. As far as being credible, perhaps thats another story.

I love how they integrate fight videos, rankings, fighter bio's with a fight history, along with previews of upcoming events and everything else. You must be proud to be affiliated with them. Hi. This is Mike Leanzas friend Drew. Mike is still trying to deal with some personal family issues and currently doesnt have time to be here. But he is planning a group article for when he gets back. He wants the top people in MMA on Bleacher Report to give there input along with himself. The topic is based upon dream matches, what would happen and each persons pick. Each writer would pick a different fight. Any fighters regardless of weight class pitted against each other. Derek, I think your article idea is awesome. I originally came up with the idea for these group articles just to kinda keep everybody involved when they are not actually writing articles. Not everybody writes an article everyday and I thought this was a way to rotate reads and comments for everyone.

I just try to come up with the idea and then I give it to one of the guys and let them run with it. We are on the third one I think, and your idea will def be one of the ones we use soon.

Derek,

I actually plan to write a full fight prediction and preview once the fight is a little bit closer on the horizon. Here are my thoughts on this matchup. I think that Manny will be extremely fast and hard for De La Hoya to hit, and may box circles around De La Hoya and make him look silly. I think he may win the first five or six rounds with no contest. I do think that at some point De La Hoya is gonna land something really hard, such as a counter left hook, that may change the complexion of the fight entirely.

So to answer your question, I kinda expect this fight to go like the fight between De La Hoya and Hopkins went. De La Hoya boxed well early and won many rounds, and Bernard caught him late. I expect a late ko for De La Hoya, but I would not be surprised if Manny won.

So it looks like Stevenson might be fighting Florian at UFC 91... I have to say I'm a little less than interested. Stevenson did not impress me vs Tibau. Hopefully this means that the winner of a fight between these two will still have one more win to go before a title shot.

Well, first be prepared for a crazy crowd. I don't know how you like crowds, if you don't like them I would suggest self medicating. Personally I had a bunch of fun with it and made friends with everyone around me and it was kind of like being at Lambeau. I didn't drink much so I wouldn't have to leave my seats since I didn't want to miss anything. Also get the best tickets you can comfortably afford. If you are okay eating Ramen and mac&cheese for two weeks to get better seats I would. The bottom line is go in knowing you're going to have a blast and you will.

Yeah I asked you because Wandy's next opponent seems to be so hard to find. I'd say Sok if he wasn't already scheduled to fight Cane. Goran is probably the guy who makes the most sense -- I think I came to the same conclusion as you when I was thinking about this. Good point about Cro Cop.

Sean Sherk vs Tyson Griffin is a great match and is the type of match I've been waiting for Sherk to have, and Griffin to have. Sherk vs another strong wrestler, and Griffin making a step up in competition. It's also a fight I haven't heard anything about.

Rampage vs Silva would be awesome, I wasn't sure if Rampage coming back this fast would even be plausible. Who do you think Silva might face next if it's not Rampage?

The Liddell vs Griffin and GSP vs Penn matches are definitely things that have been in my head for a late December card but it's nice to hear the same thing from you... it makes it seem so much more likely to happen.

The fact that they're thinking about pushing Bisping to a title fight this fast is interesting... but I can't dispute it. I think they should do that even if he hasn't exactly earned the shot yet.

Something is going on, what it is I have no idea. I'm interested to see who is going to run things now that Shaw and Deluca stepped down. Shields should get to the UFC and fast. He needs to finish his contract and bolt. I would love to see him get the winner of GSP/Fitch.

I thought Rogers/Kimbo would be a lock but who knows. They can't give him Rico, Silva would beat him. Maybe Herman? The ratings showed that they need at least one member of the Slice/Carano duo to be on a card. The show in October will be very interesting.

Rumors are that if Carano doesn't get Cyborg she will get another Minnesota girl Kelly Kobald.

Hear any other rumors for 90 yet, other than Rua/Coleman?

Lesnar will destroy Herring in spectacular fashion. I still think that he got hosed during the Mir fight. The stepped in and thats what saved Mir, if that wouldn't have happened Lesnar would have pounded out Mir. Lesnars wrestling is just too good, anyone that doesn't have a top tier wrestling background is going to be on their back with Lesnar pounding the snot out of them. I really liked what I saw from Valesquez, great wrestling and control, great team, he's gonna be a beast. Lesnar will get past Herring and then maybe a rematch with Mir or maybe Werdum, Kongo, or even Valesquez.

Alves is going to beat Sanchez then they almost Have to give him a shot at the strap. Kos has gotten lost in the shuffle but if he beats Lytle he has to be in the mix. I don't understand why Sanchez gets a shot at Alves. I'm really stoked to see what Aoki can do at the Grand Prix. That gogo from mount was sick, I've never seen it in a mma match, Aoki pulled in a grappling match once but it was still impressive. Hope all is going well for ya. Peace.

I was just thinking that with the draft upon us the Bleacher Report MMA writers could hold their own mock mma draft.

I was thinking that 10 writers could be assigned to this task maybe mor. A community leader could pick the writers names out of a hat. Therefore someone would write down our names and the order drawn would be the order we would select our fighter.

No, but that sounds amazing. Really great opportunity for Palhares. They have a lot of confidence in him. I think Henderson will likely just try to stay on his feet and use his superior striking. He has the wrestling to do that. Hendo will just have to watch out for those quick leglocks and possibly guard pulls.... Keep me up to date with rumors like these more often and it'd be MUCH appreciated.

It is hard to give you any advice since it isn't clear about where the site will lead. Fighters.com is cool with me writing here because anything I write doesn't step on the toes of my other articles, and, if anything, sometimes publicizes the site through hyperlinks.

Having said that, Bleacher Report will probably still be here for a long time. This could be a really great opportunity for you and it might be worth giving it a chance. If it fails, we would love to see your contributions again, and if it succeeds, who knows what kind of opportunities it will provide.

Beyond that, just make sure if you are getting paid that you don't give out your social security number to them unless you have either run a check on them or signed up for lifelock.

My thoughts exactly. I was watching some other fights of his online, and his leglocks are amazing. He transitions to them so easily. His strength seems freakish as well. I agree with the thought about his stand up, he'll definitely need to keep working on it. The best guys out there will be able to handle a guy who only goes for take downs and jitz without mixing up a stand up game to set it up. And I think he's the perfect guy to beat Anderson if his wrestling as is good as it seems. Also gotta wonder what his conditioning is like. Either way he's due to have some cool matchups, especially ones against guys like Maia and Lister.

Yup, good article by Iole. I wonder though how much damage was done by that card. A lot of potential long-term fans may have been turned off by the unprofessionality of what they saw. Thank goodness the WEC card today was much better.

I wish everyone who watched Elite XC on Saturday would watch the WEC card, because that is what real MMA is all about. Some fans have commented that the Elite XC card took MMA backwards 15 years. Zuffa is still the best when it comes to running a promotion.

As for MMA magazines, I think that the U.K. based Fighters Only magazine is #1. Fight Sport is pretty good too. A lot of new ones have cropped up recently. Everyone wants to make a profit from the growing sport of MMA.

bro im not only tuning in, im wearing my stop watching kimbo shirt.(joke)

this WEC is washing away that bad taste i have in my mouth from throwing up after watching that garbage last night. I very much want our sport to grow in leaps and bounds, but not at this cost. Im looking at all these kimbo articles with 23 million reads and its so disgusting. I wish we could ban those articles. lol.

Id rather MMA remain a niche sport than watch more of what I saw last night. Fighters not making weight, fights stopped cause of eye gouges, as soon as a guy gets knocked down, watching a fixed kimbo fight, UGH!

yet i digress.......................

as soon as I see who kimbo is fighting next, if it aint rogers im starting my stop watching kimbo campaign.

I like (and subscribe to) Ultimate Grappling. The only problem is that I originally started getting it for the BJJ side of it, but it seems to be pretty heavily filled with MMA events and results from a month or more ago.
Elite Fighter is a good one, too. That would probably be the other one I would subscribe to.
Black Belt is okay.

I would just say, go to Barnes and Noble (or Borders or whatever is close to you) and check out the selection. Go from there.

Just keep in mind that you aren't going to get any breaking news, the publication time is just too long. But they are good for training tips, interviews and behind the scene looks at events.

The initial interview (Nick Thompson) was set up by the site through the management. We had been trying to get an interview with Sherk for a long time and it just so happened that he was at the rolling session that I watched of Nick's. On my way out I took a chance and asked one of the gyms that runs the gym about a possible interview, we went, asked and set it up.

I didn't have to get any clearance from the gym itself. I think that they just liked seeing their fighters showcased and having their gym mentioned. I got nothing short of a warm response. I know it won't always be like that, but it was a cool way to start.

With Nick I was there for over 3 hours (I will be going over it after fighters.com posts the article closer to his fight at Sengoku III). I watched his caveman training, bag work and rolling session.

With Sean, his schedule was a bit more tight. I came in for the interview and had to wait a little while as he finished up some speedbag work and then interviewed him during a meal break.

It was easier than you would think. I just started working with fighters.com and the editor asked if I would be able to interview Nick Thompson as a pre-Sengoku article. From there things just started rolling. They were all really cool and polite there, more than willing to give access.

As far as getting an interview with Sean Sherk (which will be posted this weekend on fighters.com and I will be writing up a piece on this site for), it was as simple as asking. Of course face to face helped. He is a hard guy to get a hold of any other way and being in Minnesota helped my end. He is intense in training and a little intimidating to watch, but he was really cool with being interviewed.

I think you just need to start asking and keep asking until you get a response from the fighters you are looking to interview. Some might be more open than you think.

Derek,

Noticed your piece was on the front page of Bleacher Report. I read it, but don't know enough about MMA to comment on it.

The only thing that I could tell you about MMA is the name "Kimbo Slice". But I realize that it's the fastest growing sport on the planet, and I'd love to have more knowledge in MMA.

I'd love to read an article if you gave an overview of the sport as a whole, tell me what I should know, who I should know about. Even touch on who I should love, and who I should hate (give a couple of sentences on the key names that I should know)

"Why Should I Watch MMA?"
"Top 10 Players to Watch in MMA"
"Top 5 Fights to Love, Top 5 Fighers to Hate in MMA"

Anyways, just a suggestion. (make sure to post this article on my wall, so that i can vote it for my pick of the day. that is, if you decide to write something like this, for us uneducated folks)

With a little bit of luck (and a lot of money) I will be there. With a little big more, I might actually be covering it.

I think that people tend to forget how many big name fighters Minnesota has turned out. Sherk, Huerta, Thompson, Larson, Lesnar... ok, those are the big names, but they are huge!

I suppose that depends on whether or not Kimbo is really the face that MMA wants. Me personally, after UFC 83, there is enough poor performances to deal with without having a bare-knuckle fighter being the new MMA posterboy.

I've been enjoying your rankings articles. I think that you give a pretty solid perspective and it is obvious that you can at least do your research on fighters. I also like that you are going outside the box as far as fighting leagues. I would be interested to see more of your take on individual fighters and their performances.

My apologies for the picture glitch, Derek. There seems to have been some kind of error in the image library, with the Ellis pic getting cross-wired with the Danica shot.
