IMScouting’s latest player to watch is FC Kobenhavn defender Matthias Jorgensen.

This 18-year-old central defender is a cornerstone of the FC Kobenhavn defence and he recently gained his first cap for the Danish national team.

With 19 league appearances this season, Matthias “Zanka” Jorgensen of FC Kobenhavn is showing from game to game that he is likely to be a future regular central defender for the Danish national team. We can expect Jorgensen to show his abilities on a much higher stage than the Danish top flight in the next few years.

It was reported this summer that English giants Liverpool are scouting him, and at only 18-years-old, he is already a cornerstone of FC Kobenhavn’s defence.

This also marks a major week in his playing career, after he came on as a substitute in Denmark’s 1-0 defeat to Wales on Wednesday night to win the first international cap of his career.

Jorgensen, who stands at 1.91 meters tall, is a calm, reliable central defender who has played for his club on the right side of defence. Despite his height, he possesses decent technique and was compared by the Danish national team assistant manager to Liverpool’s Daniel Agger due to his ability to build from the back.

Jorgensen is also a fairly fast player, who very seldom makes mistakes in defence. He is extremely strong and very hard to beat in the air, and excellent in one-on-one situations. He could work a little on his speed, as his stature makes it possible for him to be very fast in the future.

He still seems to have some problems, playing against top strikers, but this is mainly because he is young and there is scope for much improvement. Basically Jorgensen has all the abilities to play for a top European club and be one of the best defenders in the history of his country, as his quality with the ball and his attacking ability is unmatched by any other central defender in Scandinavia.

The young defender, who played for all the national youth teams, signed for FC Kobenhavn in July 2007 from B93, a local club in Østerbro, after showing great ability in the second division.

Shortly after signing, on July 21th 2007 he strained his left knee ligaments in a reserve team match, and spent seven weeks on the sidelines. Nevertheless, Jorgensen played no less than 12 games last season, scored one goal and picked up the “players’ talent of the year” award. He received votes from most of the players in the Danish league and also those of the Danes who play abroad.

“He is balanced, good with the ball, good going forward, and he is strong defensively and strong with his head.  He has most of what a good defender must have, “said Morten Nordstrand, when he described his team mate. Jorgensen himself is looking towards the future: “I am really just concentrating on being allowed to play as many matches as possible, and so everything can happen.”

“I am very happy with the playing time given to me, and I think it went well for both me and the team.  Of course there are some battles for a place in the lineup, but all in all, we are strong regardless of who is playing. I do not feel forced to play in all the matches in order to develop myself.  I am also developing in training,” he added.

According to the IMScouting database, Jorgensen’s market value stands already at 6,000K euro after his recent fantastic appearances and his contract at FC Kobenhavn runs out in the 2011-12 season.
