Hockey, NHL, Dion Phaneuf, Alex Kovalev, Patrick Roy, Rankings/List

As the season has started, a new wave of expectations comes with it. "Is this the year?"

Still, Hockey is a spectacular sport in a lot of ways. Here are the top five things that personally got me obsessed with this sport!

The Goalies

Patrick Roy was my first "favourite goalie" growing up, for geographical reasons at first, before I knew enough about hockey to get to know about others.

Goaltenders making saves usually gets the crowd going "ooooh" and "aaaah" during games. With the glove, with the stick, back-to-back, with the pipes, on the penalty kill; their saves are most times incredible!

The Fighting

I am not promoting fighting in hockey. I think cheap shots and unfounded fights (refer to Jonathan Roy) do nothing else than giving a dirty nickname to the world of hockey. But when we say team, we say team spirit. In a team spirit, there is the I-stand-for-my-teammate feature. What better way is there to make a game memorable than having almost the entire roster dropping the gloves? Come on, Coach, show 'em what you'

ve got!

The Hitting

This is how I got to be a big Dion Phaneuf fan! Concerning Mike Komisarek, nothing needs to be added on what a great blue-liner he is! My favourite ones are those in front of the bench, when the player ends up off of the ice!

The Rivalries

Is there anything to add? The Quebec Nordiques, the Boston Bruins, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Philadelphia Flyers are not big friends of mine! But they made my world a couple of times! And I wouldn't be watching as much hockey if it wasn't for them. God bless the NHL rivals!

The Scoring

Great hockey skills are undeniably exciting. Among them, the stick-handling, the penalty shots, and Alex Kovalev (sorry, I couldn't help it)! There are players who were born with hockey sticks in their hands! Seriously! Sometimes, it is just sick.

Well, my fellow hockey fans and non-hockey fans that just checked out why the heck hockey is still popular in some cities, I hope you'll have a great season.

    1. thanks, and well, as I said, God bless the Flyers! :D

  3. Great job Miah ... made my break at work the highlight of my day so far ... love the goalie video being a goalie myself ...

    1. glad to help! ;p

I know, the goalies in this video were amazing, that is why they top my list. it must be fun to play goalie, no?

  4. You're a Habs fan aren't you? well, I must say that this article is really great. Kudos to you my friend

    1. thanks a lot!
      indeed, i m a habs fan! :)

      enjoy the season,
      cheers!

  5. Well done Miah - love the vids.

One of the first great stand up for your teammate fights I remember happened in the Montreal Forum in the mid 70's. Larry Robinson took out Kings goalie Rogie Vachon behind the net. Bob Murdoch, who was at least a foot shorter than Robinson, leaped on Robinson, attacking him for hitting his goalie. Robinson was seemed really shocked the much smaller Murdoch came after him, then slapped him around for getting into it with him.

I'll always remember Murdoch for not caring if he was going to lose the fight, it was the principle of standing up for his goalie that mattered.

    1. thanks J.C.,

I know, it is something that really impresses me a lot about those players! they don't care about the outcome, they don't care about anything else than getting respect for their teammate!

great story! It must have been exiting to see that!

my favourite in this category was Sheldon Souray. we were playing the penguins two years ago, when Koivu was hit from behind (it wasn't a cheap shot at all, he was just shaken a little bit!). as the play continued, Souray just dropped the gloves in the middle of the ice, took Armstrong on the jersey and started to punch him. he has been thrown out of the game, and we lost (we missed the playoffs, they didn't!!!), but he showed some guts in team spirit!

  6. This is a great compilation! Absolutely love it!!

    1. thanks Jessica,

I am glad you liked the videos. However, the credit goes to those who created on Youtube, my job was just to pick one ! ;D
