Last night, in their first away game of the season, the Muhlenberg Mules' ice hockey team knew that they faced an intense foe in Seton Hall University. They knew what they had to do: work hard, play their system, and come out with a win.
Well that sure failed.
The Pirates simply took that system and crushed it as they annihilated the Mules 13-3.
At the beginning of the game, the play was fairly even, with a bit of an advantage going to Seton Hall. Both teams were working hard, playing their game, and communicating well with each other.
Even after Seton Hall scored their first goal of the game, Muhlenberg refused to give up. They continued to push, until Seton Hall came back with their second and third goals to end the first period up by three.
Muhlenberg came out in the second period with a quick power-play goal to revitalize the team and looked to have a chance to bounce back in the game. Unfortunately, the Pirates were able to rebound and score a few goals, ultimately ending the second period at 7-2.
The third period went even worse, as goaltender Dave Gardner was benched for third string freshman Ron Clarke. Clarke then proceeded to give up six goals en route to the final score of 13-3.
Injured in the game were senior Craig Marone with a wrist injury, freshman Danny Cohen with an ankle injury, and freshman Kit Mathers, with leg pain. All are expected to play today against Penn State University.
The Muhlenberg Ice Hockey team simply looked flat. They did a poor job of playing the system, did not communicate with each other, and simply did not look excited to be playing hockey.
Seton Hall did not so much have a better team as they did just work better. They worked harder, better with each other as teammates, and seemed to want it more.
Muhlenberg looked like they were still asleep from the trip to their away game.
Perhaps it is jitters, perhaps they are unprepared, perhaps they are just not focused, or perhaps they really aren't good enough. The latter is most likely not true, as when Muhlenberg plays to their full potential, they are almost unbeatable.
However, everyone, including the coaches, players, and maybe even the fans, need to figure out how to get that potential out of the team, or this club could be in for a long, winless season.
