Everton had a frustrating transfer season.

The Toffees were chasing Sporting Lisbon's prized midfielder, Joao Moutinho, for most of the summer, a move which never came off.

David Moyes landed Lars Jacobsen and Segundo Castillo before the signings of Louis Saha and Marouanne Fellaini.

The Belgian midfielder appears to be a hasty purchase.

Fellaini, who was signed for £15m from Standard Liege, has not really come out with an impressive performance yet but it appears Everton signed him only because of two impressive performances for his former club against Liverpool.

  • B/R Ticket Guide

Everton were knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Fellaini's ex-club Standard Liege and out of the Carling Cup by Blackburn Rovers—silverware aspirations are stuck with the FA Cup because the Premier League is certainly out of reach.

Perhaps, it's too early to judge the Belgian midfielder—especially as he has five years remaining on his contract—but judging by his early performances, including his performance in the Merseyside derby defeat, it appears £15m wasn't worth it.

Everton already have some quality in midfield with the likes of Mikel Arteta, Tim Cahill, Leon Osman, and Phil Neville—which might provide Fellaini with more time to settle in.

Perhaps, if Everton had gone beyond breaking their transfer record and paid the £23.5m for Moutinho...

What do you say David Moyes and Bill Kenwright?

  1. I think you are talking more about the player's price than his quality. Yes, he is overpriced for 15m but thats the way football is going these days.

    1. Fair enough, Warren but he really hasn't shown anything which makes him worth even 5m let alone 15m.

  2. I think it is unfortunately the way football is heading Salaar. As Warren said, he is overpriced just as mnay players are over priced these days. Think back to all the players Chelsea bought for way over the odds, hardly played them and then packed them off again (Kezman, Smertin etc). I doubt we'll ever see this kid live up to his price tag.

    1. That's true Maire..In Chelsea's case they bought many player and sold them on scrap value..Damien Duff for e.g bought for 17m and sold for 5m..Thanks for the comment, Maire.

    2. At least Duff got to play a few games for them many didn't even get that opportunity

  3. Well they and few other clubs were said to be tracking his progress for a while now. He played in the olympics for Belgium so is rated up there with their highest talents. I'm guessing you didn't know too much about the guy before he signed and he'll need a settling down period as the belgian league to prem is a big step. He could be brilliant player for them but because of his age could also be a big flop. Let's hope it's the former. Moyes deserves it.

  6. Marouane Fellaini is one of the biggest talents of Belgium and he's still fairly young. Give the lad half a season or so.

    1. presumed good until proven otherwise :p

    2. I've seen the kid play at Standard and at the Olympics. The talent is there ;-)

  8. He was very good today against Newcastle. Scored his first premier goal and gave the Toon trouble in the box several other times. WAY to early to judge him. You can easily see that there is plenty of talent there. I think he'll grow into it.

Evertons biggest problem has been defense. Lots of silly marking and easy goals given up. Even today, they were up 2 to 0 over Newcastle. Two poor defensive stands and they end up with a draw.

  9. You can't judge a player after 2-3 games, give the guy some time - he might actually come good.
