Everyone was extremely eager, awaiting this game. Muhlenberg College's first ice hockey game of the new season. The 2008-09 season, the one which is supposed to bring another GNCHC Championship back to MC.
Well, if this first game is any indication of things to come, then the Mules look like the Flyers; very inconsistent.
Muhlenberg dropped their first game of the season, playing against the always-tough East Stroudsberg University Warriors by a score of 5-4.
ESU dominated the first period of their third game, as Muhlenberg seemed to struggle to get their legs under them. ESU scored three times in the first period, including a power play goal.
During intermission, 'Berg coach Ken Latteman and the rest of the coaching staff stressed tighter point coverage, as most of the ESU shots came from the top left side of the point. He also made sure that his Muhlenberg players were not getting sucked into dirty games that ESU was playing, including hitting after the whistles in order to draw Muhlenberg penalties. ESU was never called for unsportsmanlike conduct.
As the second period started, Muhlenberg seemed pumped up and ready to play, whileESU looked extremely overconfident to start the second frame. Muhlenberg came out to play immediately, scoring ten seconds after their first power play of the period ended. They then scored on their next two power plays to tie the game at three, and sophomore Jon Lyons scored his second goal of the night to give Muhlenberg a 4-3 lead.
In the third period, however, Muhlenberg was the team that looked a bit cocky and overconfident, as ESU came out five minutes into the period to tie up the game. Then, with just over ten minutes remaining in regulation, ESU batted a puck that was in the air above the crossbar into the net.
'Berg argued the call, as the referee was looking at a hit that had just occurred, and therefore was unable to see the goal, yet he demanded that the goal be allowed. As the Muhlenberg bench went crazy, yelling for justice, the team started to unravel, and was unable to put any pressure on the Warriors for the last ten minutes of regulation.Muhlenberg was unravelling so much that they were unable to pull their goalie until about twenty seconds left in the game, and even so, they still were unable to get the puck out of the defensive zone.
Muhlenberg plays at Seton Hall this Saturday at 8:30 PM, and home against Penn State this Sunday at 2:00 PM.
Muhlenberg Alumni Cheats to Defeat Current Students
The Muhlenberg alumni had returned to play ice hockey against their former team. Very few showed up, so the teams were split as follows: Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors versus seniors and alumni.

Alan,
Muhlenberg Hockey. Man I like your Flyer articles better. Ha, Ha!
I have to say stick with the Division I college teams for really good hockey. Even the D-III teams like Elmira, Oswego or Middlebury, VT. These teams have some players who can either get drafted or able to pick up a tryout with a pro-franchise.
I do like college hockey of all sorts as well though. Junior College Hockey is worth watching if you watch the right teams like SUNY Canton 15 time National Champions. They place 85% of their players in Division I schools.
