Today the team for the first two tests against Australia will be announced. The Irani Trophy failed to propel any youngsters to challenge the seniors and the new committee headed by dasher Srikanth will, in all probability, play the first ball safe by going for the tried and trusted combination.

This means Sachin, Dravid, and Laxman will all play along with Sehwag and Gambhir. Even Ganguly may get another chance. Badrinath, Rohith, Kaif, and Kohli will have to wait atleast till the end of test No. 2. The bowling will be spearheaded by Zaheer and Ishanth with Kumble and Harbhajan providing the spinning options.

Skipper-in-waiting Dhoni will don the gloves. It wouldn't be a bad idea to go in for an additional bowler in Munaf instead of a sixth batsman. If Ganguly does not get a look in, this would be a wiser option considering what happened to Ishanth in Colombo.

But how long can the seniors go on? Kumble is 37 and Laxman, the youngest of the lot, is 33. The Lankan series clearly exposed the drop in their performance levels. Indian Cricket is such that no icon, except Sunny Gavaskar, timed his departure to perfection. It has always been a case of the administation dropping the bombshell to the utter dismay of a senior pro who then goes to town on how he has been ill-treated.

High time this scenario is avoided and the seniors treated with respect with regards to them calling quits. No one can deny the roles played by these five in bringing us to where we are in the World rankings. If this is going to be their farewell series, it should be with their consent. No bad blood, just tears of joy.
