Yankees' Nonexistent Postseason Leaves a Fan Bored, Lonely

MLB, New York Yankees, Editorial

I was born in 1993, a year the Yankees didn't make the playoffs.

That hasn't happened again until this year. For 13 years, the Yankees have played baseball in the month of October.

I, being a lifelong fan, have always looked forward to a Bronx postseason. Every year, I followed the MLB in hopes that the Yankees would add to their total 26 World Series championships.

If I had been a little older at the time, I know I would have appreciated the wins in 1996-2000. Back then, I wasn't really aware of how big the Yankees were. I couldn't witness the team win with a rookie shortstop in '96, sweep the Padres in '98, watch Curtis's walk-off in '99, or even view the infamous 2000 Subway Series.

For the past few seasons, I never pictured the Yankees not making the playoffs; that was the way life went. As soon as I was getting into the groove of following the team closely, paying attention to stats, and participating in Fantasy Baseball, things over in the Bronx were shaken up.

  • B/R Ticket Guide

Joe Torre was fired and Joe Girardi was brought in. Yankee Stadium would experience its final days. I attended one game in the Bronx this year, as tickets were near impossible to get: Joba Chamberlain's first major league start. He got shelled as the Yankees lost 9-3.

Now, as the 2008 season comes to an end, I'm at a loss. There has never been this type of disappointment before. I won't get to see A-Rod strike out numerous times. I won't get to see Joba eaten alive by an infestation of flies.

The one thing that I won't witness, though, is a victory. There won't be any postseason headlines in the newspaper. There won't be any YES coverage. Worst of all, there won't be any more Yankee Stadium. Ever.

Tuning into the Mets doesn't help much. The Tampa Bay Rays' postseason would seem like a great thing to tune into, but a disadvantage of living in the New York area is that we don't get Rays games (aside from ESPN coverage). Hopefully that will change.

My Octobers have always been filled with dreams of a 27th Yankees World Series title. Now, it'll be filled with dreams of a new pitching staff in 2009.

But as I sit here sulking in my New York misery, I can only imagine what Derek Jeter, New York's beloved shortstop for the past 12 years, is planning to do. Work out? Date a 50-year-old pop singer? Throw out the first pitch in Tampa Bay's first postseason game ever?

Sure, why not. He most certainly has the time.

  1. I don't agree. I'm a Yankee fan, but I am not going to be bored in October. I have accepted that there are seasons where your team doesn't make the playoffs, and we have been fortunate to not experience many of those seasons. This has still been a great season for baseball, and the playoffs promise more excitement. Torre's Dodgers caught fire in September. The Rays make their first ever postseason appearance. Chicago and Minnesota are still battling it out in the AL central. The Phils, Mets, and Brewers are all fighting for the 2 remaining NL playoff spots. The Cubs look to win their first world series in 100 years, and the Angels appear to be unbeatable. October should be a lot of fun, and you should learn how to appreciate baseball as a fan of the game, not just as a fan of the Yankees.

  2. well i love th yankees dont get me wrong but i always had more fun watching all the other games. i just dislike when a-rod have a bad game or a bad year and every one is already giving him the cold shoulder i just dont understand last year everyone was soooo happy because arod hit 54 homeruns got an mvp was finally hiting in the 9th ining with runers in scoring position and all he was doing it and everyone was going crazy for him but this year missed 21 games still finish the season strong but like always us yankee fans have a finger to point as soon as they dont make it...is simple guys this years playoff is better than the last 6 even if the yankees are not in it love them hate them they are still the yanks... 26 championships what other team could say that 1 year off doesnt mean the end of the world the cubs probably win the ws. and espn would have something else to talk about for the rest of th winter than football...

  3. I guaradamntie that the Yankees will waste more money than Pacman Jones in a strip club in order to win their 27th World Series title in New Yankee Stadium's inaugural season

  4. You'll be able to see Rays games... the postseason is nationally telivised
